6.Update for the month of August

UTPAL SHANGHVI SCHOOL(5TH-7TH)

 

Hello parents, this is a concise list of activities done in the month of August. Please feel free to post your views or any suggestions on this blog.

STORY:-Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde

▪Brain storming questions asked revolving around the central idea of the story.

▪Discussion on kindness and its various forms from each childs perspective done and narration of the story done.

▪Vocabulary list:

gilded hilt muttered trifling dreadful
withered garret listlessly shabby embalmed

▪Children make a cause and effect chart on various personal choices they make.

▪Enacting on different parts of the story.

▪Improvisations on stories with morals.

▪Writing on any act of kindness that they have come across.

EXPECTATIONS FROM STUDENTS:-

The story was selected for its rich literature content and thought provoking message.The idea was to help children be compassionate and humane and be better individuals.

All the activities were planned accordingly.Any feedback on the same would be appreciated.

Friday (4.30pm to 6pm)

Activities done for the month

1. Enacting of the story ‘The Bold Little Tiger’

2. Vocabulary:

  • Bold, Adventure, Enough, Alert, Leapt, Investigate, Wailing, Stranded, Frightened, Overprotect, Ledge, Whisper, Exhausted

3. Discussing characteristics of the tiger and which they identified with.

4. Think of your strengths, where you need to improve and how.

5. Identify what ‘I can do’ and what ‘I am willing to do.’ (The purpose was to help them understand what they are capable of some of, some of them didn’t get it at all.)

6. Prompt- “I need your help.”& take the conversation forward. Give a number of reasons to offer help and to refuse. Bypass obstacles.

7. Make sentences on the vocabulary words. Also, write about a challenge they have taken up or the competition they participated in.

8. Vocabulary thrown open for conversation to be done next class.

9. Expectations:

  1. Recognizing their abilities.
  2. Developing thinking skills.
  3. Developing drama skills and team participation.

Activities done for the month

Enacting of the story ‘Magic in the playroom’ using vocabulary.

Vocabulary:

  • Cross, In the middle of, Grumbling, Comfortable, Leaned, Sobbing, Peep, Just right, Fairies/Pixies/Goblins, Polite, Rude, Horrid, Stare, Strange, Rushed over/rushed to

Other activities done:

  • Writing sentences for the words.
  • Telephone your friend for different reasons.
  • Discussing characteristics of a friend.
  • Talking individually about your friend.
  • Other students asked questions to the speaker(Recap of question words)
  • Students given 1 safety card or good habit card.

E.g. Finish your homework for playing OR take care with sharp                  objects.

Write a story on why you would tell someone the above.

  • Recount one happy/sad/funny/horrid experience.

Expectations:

  1. Learning new words and using them in different contexts.
  2. Building confidence and drama skills.
  3. Developing thinking skills.

Conversation on ‘A Robbery’

Vocabulary:

  • Burgled, Theft, Ajar, Investigate, Peculiar, Burglar alarm, Tamper, Access, Suspect, Insider job, Planned job, Questioning, Clues, Figure out, Occur to, Have a hand in, Look high and low

Activities done for the month:

  • Students narrated peculiar experiences.
  • Enact the conversation.
  • They had been told to write an ending to the conversation.

(e.g. Who was the culprit? How was he caught?)

  • Enact different situations using the words.

Expectations:

  1. Learning new words.
  2. Usage of the words in different contexts.
  3. Developing thinking skills and imagination.
  4. Working together as a team.

Conversation on ‘Losing things in school’

Vocabulary:

  • Lately, Stationery/Stationary, Gloomy, Grumble, Reckless, Alert, Fishy, Keep an eye on, Watch closely, Drop names, Catch red-handed

Activities done for the month:

  • Conversation read out. Conversation repeated the conversation using the vocabulary.
  • Writing work:  Complete the sentence or write a passage.

What happened then?

  • Discussion on losing things we are ‘reckless’. Brainstorming on security measures, cops etc.
  • Enacting different situations using the words.

  3. Expressing yourself, using space correctly.
  4. Interaction among peer group.

1. A conversation on: Broken Toy’

2. Vocabulary:

  • Assemble, Not fair, Accidentally, Arguing, Fault, Serves you right, Petty

3. Enacting the conversation.

4. Bringing their favourite toy or game and writing a paragraph on it.

o   Describing the toy

o   Who gave it to them?

o   Why is it their favourite toy?

5. Making sentences with the vocabulary.

6. Knowing about different rooms.

7. Expectations:

o   Usage of vocabulary and conversation skills being polished.

o   Interaction among peer group.

o   Confidence building
